— THE PROJECT

What we found, what we did

This cabin started life as a schoolhouse in the early 1800s. At some point it was moved into the city of Oak Harbor, and by the time we got to it, close to two centuries of weather had caught up with the building.

The rot was the real problem. Several logs had gone soft well past the surface, and that isn't something you stain over — a compromised log keeps failing underneath whatever you put on it, and on a building this old the logs are the structure. We cut back to sound wood and rebuilt what had failed before anything else happened.

The chinking had failed across large stretches too. On a cabin this age that's expected: the original material has been through generations of freeze and thaw, and the joints themselves have shifted as the building settled and then settled again after the move. We did caulk repair through the joints and re-chinked where the old material had let go.

With the structure sound and the joints sealed, we media blasted the exterior back to clean timber. Blasting suits old-growth log this way — nearly two hundred years of weathering opens the surface up, and blasting clears the gray and the failed finish without sanding away the tool marks and irregularities that make a building this age worth restoring in the first place.

Then Perma-Chink stain in Classic Brown, with the chinking in a stone color against it. That pairing is what gives the cabin its look now — warm brown log with pale joints between, which is how these buildings were meant to read.
