A yearly rinse with Perma-Chink soap adds real years to your topcoat
— The product we trust
Maintenance only works because it's Perma-Chink
Every wash and re-coat we do is Perma-Chink Systems' Lifeline finish — water-based, breathable, and formulated specifically for log homes, not general-purpose wood. That's the whole reason a simple wash-and-topcoat schedule can keep your logs protected for decades: the finish lets moisture escape instead of trapping it behind the coating, so the wood keeps breathing between visits. Kept up on schedule, it can go decades before it ever needs more than routine maintenance.

Not finished in Perma-Chink yet?
Maintenance keeps a Perma-Chink finish going — but it can't create one. If your logs are under an old, failing stain, we'd start with a full restoration to strip it back and rebuild in Perma-Chink. From then on, this simple schedule is all it takes to keep it lasting.
— Our process
How we do log home maintenance
01
Wash the house
A full wash clears dirt, pollen, and chalking off the logs so we can see the true condition of the finish.
02
Brighten, if needed
Very dark or sun-burned walls get a brightener first to bring the wood's color back before we re-coat.
03
Refresh the stain (optional)
A coat of Lifeline Ultra-2 or Ultra-7 brings color back where it's faded. Ultra-7 is a one-coat finish with better UV protection — a maintenance favorite.
04
Fresh topcoat
A new topcoat renews the protective layer so the finish keeps doing its job for years.
Questions about log home maintenance
How often does my log home need maintenance?
It varies with sun and weather exposure, but darkening wood or sun-burned, faded walls are your sign it's due. A wash and inspection every year or two catches problems early.
What's the difference between Ultra-2 and Ultra-7?
Ultra-2 is our two-coat restoration finish; Ultra-7 is a one-coat finish with extra UV protection that we lean on for maintenance re-coats. We'll pick the right one for your walls.
Can I do any of this myself?
Yes — a yearly rinse with Perma-Chink soap is the simplest thing you can do, and it adds real years to your topcoat. We'll show you exactly what to look for so you catch problem spots early.
What if I've let it go too long?
If the finish has failed or the wood has grayed significantly, there may be extra steps needed before applying maintenance coats. Usually, we can address the problem without a full restoration.
